How to Use Your Smartphone to take killer videos for your business

This episode is devoted to showing you how you can shoot smartphone video, not specifically with a professional camera, but with a smartphone. I truly believe you don’t have to shoot professional photographs or professional video. People love who you are – an authentic. And if that smartphone camera is always by your side, they really are happy to consume the visual snippets of your life that you have to share with them of your business.

It can be from your smartphone. People aren’t perfectionists when it comes to seeing great content that you have to share. That’s why I really love using my smartphone for video. I’m going to be sharing some resources with you which does include the new Lumix G7 that I have and that I love.

Also some of the tools that you can use to share your smartphone video really easily.
So if you’re not a professional photographer and certainly not a professional videographer, you don’t have to worry because you have an amazing tool at your side all the time. Now you probably take your smartphone with you wherever you go. Especially in business. You can’t do without it, it’s your communication. It’s your lifeline to your calendar. Everything that you do , including social media.

THE STATS:

Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube. Now that’s like an hour for each person on earth.

76% of marketers plan to increase their use of YouTube and video marketing, according to Social Media Examiner.

It’s real easy to get a photograph for your business, right? You just shoot, snap snap and you’ve got a photo. But your video marketing is so superbly different than your photos. You’re capturing a lot more information and you’re able to tell a lot more story with your video. Particularly if you’re shooting a video of your staff members or maybe your customers, with their permission of course. You can really video into the human personality of your business beyond just a flat two dimensional picture.

Now I love shooting video with my smartphone because it gives me the freedom and the flexibility to always be able to shoot video and not just photographs. I don’t have to just take a video camera around. I was just looking in my closet the other day and I found a video cam with one of those little 8mm, a little square video tape. Now if I want to see that I would have to just plug the camera into the television and just record it. I think I’m going to just save my time and effort and just have it transferred to DVD.

The way that you’re really going to take great video for your business is if you spend more time on your business. And if you use the tools that you have that are so democratized because we all have a smartphone. But how many of us really use it for video to share with our fans and the people that we potentially want to do business with.

On Video and Engagement:
It’s all about engagement, ok? Particularly in social media, you can use your videos on your website, too, and I highly recommend it to drive traffic and give your e-mail marketing a little more boost, and a little more lift. Don’t think that you have to be such as professional photographer if it’s every day stuff that you want to show behind the scenes.
If you have a product video that you want to show then you may want to get a professional videographer to do that. But hey, you have a huge opportunity to show your personality and who you are. And people want to do business with people. So that means, namely, you. It’s really an incredibly value-added bonus to your smartphone camera that you have so that you can capture motion, and so that you never miss an experience.

But you always have to keep your eye open for an opportunity to shoot video. That’s one thing that you need to have. You’re probably very involved in your business and you really are focusing on the day to day activities of your business, but even if you can’t do it yourself, see if you can have some of your team, someone on your team to help you. Think of when you have an opportunity to say, “Hey, maybe I don’t want to shoot this picture, I want to shoot a quick video.” It gives you the opportunity to go beyond just a photograph and have it pop and really stand out.

Now what I use for my smartphone videos is the iPhone 5s. That is by no means the professional up to date high-tech ”hoo-hoo” that you can use to shoot video. But it doesn’t really matter because for videos that I’ve done for businesses, like I shot a video at a restaurant in South Orange, it was great. I shot a panoramic of the interior. It’s what I had at the time. I didn’t really know that they wanted me to shoot a video so I had my smartphone, so I did it.

You can see my Instagram videos and my more professional videos on my http://youtube.com/saywowmarketing. They’re mostly recorded with my iPhone 5s. It suits what I need at this time. Yes, I’m going to be upgrading to the iPhone 6, but not right now because I’m pretty happy with the HD quality that this camera affords me.

My new mirrorless camera, Panasonic Lumix G7, has other purposes. Sometimes I want to shoot with a little more depth, more professional photos, my newborn son, I shoot a lot of stuff that way. With the iPhone I take my photos of course because it’s always there with me. But the Lumix G7 just really fits easily in a diaper bag and I can just easily go and shoot with it. Always having fun with expressions that change in a split second and the Lumix G7 shoots 4K burst photos with a 4K video mode so that’s like 30 frames a second, that’s crazy.

Burst Mode:
You’re going to capture a little fraction of a smile or something that you might capture on your smartphone in burst mode.

If you go into burst mode on your smartphone with a timer, it will shoot 10 frames for you and you select the one or ones that you want and you can choose which one you want from that, which is great for children, animals, quick motion. You get that high definition from the mirrorless camera that you just can’t with your smartphone. But for your business, it doesn’t really matter.
Think about it, you just want to capture every day stuff. Think about it. People that you really want to potentially do business with. And that means showing who you are and what you do. Again, it’s who you are and what you do and why people should want to do business with you is because you’re an authentic brand.

There’s a woman that I truly believe in and I hope to have her on this podcast very soon. I’m going to start up my interviews once again and I look forward to that – Kim Garst, from Social Boom. She does such a great job on authenticity and really why your business should be authentic. I really believe that video is going to allow you to be really authentic. Maybe even more so than a photo. Because with video, it flies by so quickly and you may be talking into the camera.

With a photo, you can do some editing with Photoshop, removing every little blemish because a photo is just one frame, one shot. But with your video, it’s very very authentic. So I just wanted to bring that up.

You can really improve your video in addition to your photos. I’m going to talk about that today. You can really get better with your smartphone video. I’m going to give you some tools today and how you can capture really great video without thinking too much of what you need to grab and to have ready to shoot that video.

Handheld video shoot:
The first kind of video that you can shoot is just handheld and that’s a given, there’s nothing I can share with you about that. You just pick up your smartphone, press video, and record. So that’s what you have. You can do some basic editing in your native camera app to edit that video like trimming and stuff but pretty much there’s nothing I can talk more about with that. There’s pretty much just the trim and that’s that. There are some more advanced video apps but I’m not going to go into that today because I want to talk about some tools. And I want to talk about why your smartphone camera is good enough to produce that video. It’s just free of inexpensive apps I really believe that you should have everything you need at your fingertips without having to pay anything extra. Right? Are you with me?

Most of these smart phones have great HD capability. I wrote a book, “Visual Marketing
Secrets: How to Use Smartphone Photography to Engage Online and Attract more Customers” which is available on Amazon. I can give you the link for that. But in my book, the experts that I interviewed also shoot with smart phone video in addition to their smart phone photographs.

My last podcast episode 90 was Frank Corrado who is an owner of a small business here in Wayne New Jersey. He owns Corrado’s Market, it’s a grocery store, they have a lot of fine foods, deli, bakery, all kinds of stuff. It’s a great place. Now one thing that I love, is that he is a professional photographer, it’s something that he loves. He has those tools added to his toolbag. He knows how to capture; he knows how to frame a shot. He knows how to direct his subjects to make the photos, the video, better – which is what I believe you should do. He shoots smartphone video.

He did a really cool video which was on how to make pizza at home with their pizza dough, with cheese and stuff and everything. He has it up on YouTube. He did the video and he put it up on Facebook, he put it up on YouTube. It’s more fun, not instructional but fun – you just want to do it, get their pizza dough and make your own pizza. That’s a very simple video.I don’t know what kind of business you have but if you could think of a way to make something that you do instructional, something that will help people improve their lives in some way, even if it’s not on a grand scale, you can definitely make videos like that. Just get the wheels turning. Think of take a video of and make it an experience.

Beyond just a photo, it’s all about capturing an experience in your videos that’s going to really draw people in that it’s authentic not a professional production and know that you took time out of your day to shoot that video they really will appreciate it to know that you took a little time out of your day to share your self. With a video you can really be more effective in communicating emotion and engaging your viewer in a way that your photo can’t.

So think of it this way. If you have a picture, and a picture is worth 1000 words, but if you have a video it’s worth even more. Think of something that can’t be captured in a photograph. Say you have a basketball player and he’s about to make a slam dunk. That’s a good photo but in comparison to video footage of the actual play, right through the dunk and all the crowds cheering when it was made, that evokes even more emotion.

On SEO:
If you can have your photographs that’s fantastic because you’re building your SEO; you’re building your visual content on the web and the more stuff you have, the more the spiders of the search engines can sink their teeth into, then the more value your business is going to have and they will serve and drive traffic to your website. But if you have a video and it can engage a person more than just a flat two-dimensional photograph, you’re going to engage and you have the potential to get more customers. And that is completely what I am about. I’m not just sitting here looking to make you a better photographer and an amazing videographer, I want you to engage people, to show you are authentic and to really drive them to you to see what they can get from you and learn how they can potentially do business with you and learn why you are the solution to their potential problems.

When you are sharing video from your smart phone, a lot of times you do it from the app you want to share it through the app or you may want to use email. So I’m going to give you a few places that you can share your videos at after you record them, because if you just keep them on your phone they’re not going to do anything.

Where to Share:
You can share them on your website depending on what kind of website you have. If you have a WordPress platform you can upload video but the best way to do it is to upload them to YouTube and then embed the video on your blog or your website, whatever it is. If it’s WordPress-based I’m just going to call it blog for now. So you have it on YouTube and then you embed the video.

In the same way you can uploaded it to Vimeo and embed that as well. So either one of those YouTube or Vimeo. I highly recommend YouTube because YouTube is owned by Google and if you want to show up in search results it’s best to have it on YouTube and it will show a thumbnail next to the search result. You’re not going to just come up with a little snippet, you’re going to come up with the search result but also with a thumbnail of your video.
So you also have Instagram. On instant when you can share but you can only share 15 seconds of that video so your content is going to be a little more limited so you can trim it to whatever 15 seconds of that video want.

You can certainly uploaded to Facebook and Facebook is getting a lot more friendly because it’s competing with Google plus and of course you can upload your stuff to Google plus but Facebook is getting a lot more friendlier and may want you to upload those videos and I definitely recommend you do it because you’re going to be showing up a lot more on search results in Facebook now, they’re very to that, more so than before.

And of course you can pin videos on Pinterest. I don’t know if you know that. You can pin images but you can also pin your video creations on Pinterest too.

Landscape Orientation:
Make sure when you’re orienting your smart phone when you’re taking a video, do it sideways in the landscape orientation. When you press record make sure your phone is not straight up and down because YouTube will show it as a strip, portrait strip in the center of the video to black boxes on the side. If you hold it sideways you’re going to do it landscape as all videos are on YouTube and then you will have an optimum size and a filled frame for your YouTube video rather than just two boxes and then the strip. So give yourself a little reminder. Make a post it note for yourself if you record in your office whatever it is that you do, but don’t forget that you shoot in the landscape orientation.

I’m going to end today on three resources that I want to share with you. Two of them are particularly for smart phones. One of them is the tripod mount that I use. I cannot do without it. When I shoot, I do it with my tripod.
First I want to talk to you about the mount. I recommend the Jellyfish black universal spring tripod mount. It’s got a little micro ball head and it also has jelly legs so you can make a little micro tripod, which is pretty cool, for your iPhone. So you can bring your tripod with you and your mount becomes a mini tripod. So check it out on Amazon. I’m going to give you a link in the show notes to this episode.
And then my second smart phone and photography resource is the MeFOTO A1350Q1T Roadtrip Travel Tripod Kit. It’s made of titanium and it’s the most sturdy, sturdy tripod that I’ve had. I’ve had aluminum tripod, I’ve tried those. I’ve had plastic. I just go out and about with my tripods and I throw them in my bag and those don’t last. This one is indestructible I love this tripod. It’s very freeing, you don’t have to worry about the joints snapping off or anything. I’m going to be making a video reviewing this tripod, is absolutely fantastic. It’s a travel tripod and it pops out to a full-sized tripod. It’s got color, this one is green that I use. You can use it with your standard tripod mount. You can use it with a DSLR, a mirrorless, a point and shoot and it converts to a mono pod in seconds. So with your smart phone mount that I told you about, the Jellyfish, it’s the one that I recommend so you’re going to have an iPhone mount that’s going to fit on this tripod. When you have it mounted on the tripod it’s amazing. It just goes with you anywhere and you have the ability to just shoot a video at regular tripod height. It’s just when I did with the restaurant. I just popped on the top of this iPhone mount, smart phone mount, it’s not just for iPhones, and you can use it as a video camera. This tripod has a very very unique feature, it converts to a monopod in seconds. Now what is a monopod? I’ll tell you this, if you want to be at an event that you’re going to shoot video at, say you want to shoot at a gala, if you take your smart phone and you shoot the video handheld, it’s going to be a little shaky. They’re getting better at the stabilizers within the smart phones but you’re still going to get some shake and the only way to eliminate that is to have it on a fixed surface. So this converts to a monopod, a mono pod, which is just one stick and you’ve mounted your smart phone on top of that one stick. So it’s great because it’s a tripod that I use in my office here, it’s my studio, and I can shoot videos at my desk. If I’m out, I was at a fitness event, and I converted the tripod to a monopod, and I was able to go out and about with. I didn’t have to worry about setting up my tripod, taking up space, it doesn’t have a big footprint so that’s really nice. So I recommend that tripod.

Then I’m going to give you the link for my camera that I shoot video with, not because I want to replace my smartphone camera in any way, it’s just an additional tool for me. It’s something that I like to use for personal use because there are things you can do with a professional camera, or more professional camera, that you can’t do with a smartphone. Your smart phone wants to capture everything it sees in its view in its lens and it wants to take a very big, very shallow depth of field. Everything is flat looking. You can kind of tell which pictures are taken with a smart phone and which were not, unless some special effect was added to it to give it some depth of field. Instagram has a feature called the tilt angle, will get into that in another episode. But I just want to say there’s a great deal that I found on Amazon. It’s the Panasonic G7. It’s a mirrorless camera and it’s got all of this stuff that comes with it, camera bag, an extra battery, a charger and it’s a pretty good deal. So I found it and I just want to put it up there for you in case any of you are interested in shooting 4K, 4K photo or video, in case you’re interested. But I just wanted to give you those other two resources I certainly couldn’t do without. It’s my iPhone mount or smart phone mount that you can use if you have an android device or an LG. ,MeFoto, my tripod that I absolutely love. It’s a travel tripod kit , made of titanium.

So that’s what I wanted to share with you today. I want to give you a little better insight on how you can shoot better video. I don’t want you to be afraid of using your smart phone for taking video of your business. You don’t have to be a professional videographer by any means. Probably you’re already taking selfies for your business. People know that if you’re taking selfies that’s not a professional photographer coming in and shooting the picture of you. It’s you. So take some time and start practicing with shooting video for your business. If you’re an entrepreneur see what it is that you do throughout your day that you could bring other people into.

I hope that helps you if you have any questions for me please post them for me on my blog at saywowmarketing.com/episode91.
