Episode 90 – Interview with Frank Corrado, Business Owner and Photographer

Twitter Post - Branded

Using your smartphone to enhance your online presence is a valuable tool for your marketing kit.   I was able to interview Frank Corrado, owner of Corrado’s Family Market and Corrado’s Pet Market in Wayne New Jersey on this very subject. . Frank is an avid photographer with a lot of professional equipment, but he uses his smartphone to grab pictures for his business.  He’s very active in social media, sharing these great photos.

Here are some of the questions about smartphone photography I asked.

Now, we know that you have a professional camera. You have gear that you use for it. You have an appreciation for the art of photography. You understand the fundamental principles of it. Why use your smartphone?

“I’m nervous about it getting ruined or broken or damaged or stolen. I don’t bring it with me everywhere. I’m at work, I’m not going to carry around this big camera. I have my phone and I bring that around. Today, I took a great picture of prime beef steaks and I put it up on the web. I did it on my phone. It came up awesome. It’s just easy. I just take it on my pocket and I’ll get that picture and take a picture instantly. It’s like another set of eyes.”

What do you take food photos with? Do you take it with a particular app or do you use the native camera?

“I just use the native camera. Sometimes, I’ll just check and see like, they have that little edit, quick edit tool and an enhance tool. I’ll see how it looks on there. If it looks good then I’ll use it. I might enhance it with tones or hue.”

When you’re photographing with a smartphone, because you have this foundation in photography, you have an eye for your subject and you know how to frame your shots, tell me a little bit about your composition technique.

” Most of the time, probably 99% of the time, I’m just looking to fill the frame. I think in social media, when they pull it up on a picture, you don’t want the steak to be in the bottom right hand corner and have all these other stuff in the picture. I want them just to see the steaks or when we had purple asparagus the other day, I don’t want them to see the background with the signs and people there … I want them to see just the asparagus. That’s pretty common in the food industry and that’s what I do.”

Do you ever go into your pet store and photograph?

“I used to go in there a lot more when we had on-site grooming. I’d go in there and take pictures of the pets after they were groomed or while they’re getting groomed. We would text them or put them up on Facebook and then tag the owner in it.”

Do you ever take photographs of your staff or your team or your customers?

“My staff. Customers, no. Unless I know them then I would. Mainly staff like somebody’s birthday or veteran’s day if there’s a veteran that works for us, we’ll take a picture and say whatever they did for our country. Things like that. Maybe like a fun pictures like one of the staff members holding lobsters when on sale. That’s kind of fun stuff like that. Or in the kitchen during the holiday when the chefs are working real hard. I’ll take pictures of them.  I think it’s important for our customers to see and be personalized with our staff.”

Do you ever create videos with your smartphone?

“Maybe last year or the year before, I was on this kick like, “I want people to know how to do certain things.” I made a video on how to make pizza at home with our pizza dough and cheese and stuff like that. I filmed our pizza guy making it and I put captions on the bottom, instructions on every step how to do it. We have it up on Youtube right now. It’s on our Facebook page in there somewhere. I’ve done a video how we make our fresh home made donuts in the store, the apple cider donuts. I did a video on that. That was more fun, not instructional but like more fun.”

Episode 88 – How to Use Your Smartphone to Take the 6 Must-Have Photos for your Business

How to use Your Smartphone to Take the 6 Must-Have Photos for Your BusinessLinkedIn

In this episode, I show you how easy it is to how you can use your smartphone to take the 6 photos your business needs for visual marketing online for your business.

First I must tell you about my new love – the Panasonic Lumix G7 mirrorless camera.  You can just send the pictures over to your smartphone right away. It’s super easy. You share these pictures immediately via Wi-Fi to your camera. You could also use your smartphone to do remote shooting with the features and controls in the smartphone app. That’s a total improvement to smartphone photography.

Today I want to talk about the 6 must-have photos for your business and how you can use your smartphone to take them.

1) Product / Service photos.

The first type of photo that you must have for your business are your product, your service photos. Now those can be either your new products and services or ways that you can show utility for your products and services. It’s going to add more value for a potential customer who wants to see how your product or service is going to benefit them before they make their purchase decision.

2) Celebrations/ Important Events

They’re really the perfect opportunity to share what other people really can’t experience if they weren’t there. When you have an opportunity to take a quick photo or even a video, you’re going to share something with them that makes them feel special, that they were able to get a sneak, peek at.  Just remember if you have other people in your photos at your business location, you always want to make sure to get a business consent to use their photos.

3) Behind the Scenes

You have a lot of consumer-facing photos that people are already familiar with, but if you can be the eyes and ears behind the scenes for your customers then you can give them a potential look at all the work that you put into your products and services, giving you a little bit more authenticity and value to your products and services as opposed to somebody that does not.

4) Staff and Team members

Everybody loves to see a human face behind a brand to make them authentic. I know I’m this way. You want to do business with people that you like and that you are connected to as opposed to just some vague business entity. Also, if you have somebody that is easily recognizable from the photos, it’s going to help you form a stronger connection between you and your customers, which is awesome.

5) Business Location

If you have an office building or a location that maybe you are next to a certain recognizable landmark and you want to take a picture for somebody to see how to get to your business location, you can shoot a picture with your smartphone. You can also use that on your website to show people what to look for, where it is, what they visually should see. If it’s easily recognizable visually then you’re going to get more traffic to your business location. It’s not something that you might have thought of before, but certainly your physical location is very, very important to market your business.

6) Before and After

If there’s some change that’s shown by your service that you can provide then take a before before you even touch anything then take an after picture.

In my book, Visual Marketing Secrets: How to Use Smartphone Photography to Engage Online and Attract More Customers, you have an example of this adorable little dog. I’m not sure if it’s a Shih Tzu or what kind of a dog it is, but you have a before and an after picture. This dog has a real scruffy look before, he needed a real haircut. Then after, this dog has his head cocked to the side like Nipper from Victrola. I think that’s Victrola. It was a little dog and he was just cocking his head to the side.  He looks adorbs. He has his hair all coiffed and cut now. You have a before and an after picture. “Look, this was the dog that came to me before,” click, snap of the smartphone, and then you have, “This is what this dog looks like after.”

It’s really amazing to me that now you can really take these pictures yourself whether you use your smartphone or you use another camera to share the pictures with your smartphone. You can certainly hire a professional photographer to do it for you, but people are so forgiving now in social media that they know that you don’t have to be a professional photographer, but they really, really appreciate when you share some photos with them that they wouldn’t be able to see anywhere else. If you capture their attention, they’re all the more appreciative for it.

087 The Latest Facebook Update to Support Animated GIFs

Facebook support for animated gifs can catch eyes. Watch for the full Business Page rollout.

Facebook support for animated gifs can catch eyes. Watch for the full Business Page rollout.

At the end of May of 2015, Facebook announced  that they’re going to support animated GIFs in your Facebook news feed. Now not everybody’s going to see that functionality immediately, but it’s still rolling out. People with personal accounts, personal Facebook profiles, not business pages yet, but they have announced that they are going to be rolling that out to pages and mobile very soon. It’s pretty exciting because it gives us a chance to use visual marketing more than just plain videos and large sexy photos on Facebook. That will be a great opportunity for a lot of marketers and small business owners, even larger brands to get in front of eyeballs that are looking for exciting and engaging content. It’s a great decision a lot of people are saying that Facebook has made to turn the news feed into something more interesting for its users.
